Brazil Begins Switching Coffee Bean Varieties

Brazil is the world’s largest producer of Arabica coffee beans, a variety known for its mild flavour.

However, as climate change makes Arabica increasingly difficult to cultivate, some farmers have begun planting Robusta beans. Robusta beans have a more bitter flavor but are more tolerant of higher temperatures and pests.

Brazil’s traditional coffee-growing regions primarily produce Arabica beans, but these areas are experiencing more frequent and severe droughts, coupled with continuously rising temperatures.

While Arabica remains Brazil’s main coffee export, Robusta production is growing faster: according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which tracks global coffee production, Robusta production has increased by more than 81% over the past decade.

Brazil remains the world’s leading coffee exporter in 2025, followed closely by Vietnam and Colombia. Global coffee exports for the 2025/26 crop year are projected at approximately 122 million bags (60 kg each).

Key Market Insights for 2026
Record Production: Global output for the 2025/26 crop year is forecast at a record 178–179 million bags, driven by recoveries in Vietnam and Indonesia and record output in Ethiopia.

Regional Dominance: Brazil alone accounts for nearly 40% of the world’s supply, significantly influencing global prices.
Vietnam’s Milestone: Vietnam’s coffee export value surpassed $7 billion for the first time in history by late 2025/early 2026, fuelled by rising Robusta demand and high global prices.

African Growth: Uganda has reached a record annual earning of over $2 billion.
Re-Exporters: Many non-producing countries like Germany and Switzerland are top exporters by value, as they import green beans, process (roast) them, and re-export them globally.
